U.S. Montgomery Land Office - cancellation registers, 1869-1908.

Land purchases could be cancelled for various reasons at various times. Occasionally the purchaser would relinquish the land because he could not complete the payments or the purchase could be cancelled by the U.S. Land Commissioner because the land was later determined to be improperly sold or because the purchaser did not meet the necessary requirements. This series consists of a register of cancelled homestead entries, 1869-1872, and a general cancellation record, 1905-1908. The homestead register lists the homestead entry number, the name and address of the purchaser, the date, the tract location and contains notes explaining the cancellation. The general cancellation record contains the application number, the date, the name of the applicant, the tract location, the number of acres, the reason for cancellation and a computation of acreage cancelled by county. These records document the difficulties encountered when attempting to obtain land and maintain ownership.
